Principles of Sports injury rehabilitation

Seven priniciples which lay the foundation of any successful rehabilitation program -

Avoid aggravation - Exercises if done in an aggravated manner in order to improve faster can make the injury worse.
Timing - ‘The sooner the better’,rehab program should be started as soon the rest period needed is over. Too much rest can become a problem in recovery.
Compliance - if the patient is not compliant, the
rehabilitation program will not be successful. Patient
should be well informed about the duration and other
details of the whole journey.
Individualization – Every person has a different response
system, hence the rehab program is customized to each
individual’s injury and healing response.
Specific sequencing – The exercise program should
follow a sequence of exercise to promote healing in a
proper way.

Intensity – the intensity should not be too vigorous or
too low.

Fundamental components of Rehabilitation -

Irrespective of the injury, there are few fundamentals of rehabilitation which should be considered -

1.Pain Management through electrotherapy, manual therapy, dry needling, iastm, soft tissue techniques etc.
2.Flexibility and Joint ROM through manual therapy, stretchings, exercises, dry needling, etc.
3.Strength and Endurance through exercise programmes.
4.Proprioception and Coordination through exercises.
5.Functional Rehabilitation through functional activities.
6.The use of Orthotics to provide support and stability when required.
7.Psychology of Injury through discussing and motivating the patient.
