What Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis) Mean?

It is the most common overuse syndrome in the elbow. It is the tendinopathy injury involving the extensor muscles of the elbow ( brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis, extensor digitorum, carpi ulnaris .

These muscles originate from the lateral epicondylar of the distal humerus.

  • Despite the name you can also find this condition in other sports such as squash , badminton, baseball swimming and field throwing events .

Diagnostic Tests
  • Cozen’s test – it is also known as resisted wrist extension test. The elbow is stabilised in 90 degree flexion. The therapist palpate the lateral epicondylitis. High sensitivity has been found with positive findings .
  • Mill’s test – The patient is seated with the upper extremity relaxed at the side and the elbow extended. The examiner passively stretches the wrist in flexion and pronation. Pain at the lateral epicondyle or proximal musculotendinous junction of the wrist extensors is a positive sign for tennis elbow.
  • Maudsley’s test – The examiner resists extension of the third digit of the hand, while palpating the lateral epicondyle. A positive test is indicated by pain over the lateral epicondyle. An 88% sensitivity has been found for including the LET diagnosis but not excluding it with confidence.

Dry needling

  • Dry needling targets your trigger points, which are tight knots or bands of muscle that can cause pain and discomfort. A needle inserted into a trigger point creates a small lesion that triggers the body’s natural healing response. This response includes the release of endorphins, which are natural painkillers and activating the immune system to reduce inflammation. Over time, the body repairs the damage caused by the needle and the trigger point is released, resulting in pain relief and improved range of motion.
