What is Gluteal Tendinopathy ?

Gluteal tendinopathy is a condition characterized by damage or degeneration of the tendons that attach the gluteal muscles (the muscles of the buttocks) to the hip bone. It is a common cause of hip and buttock pain, especially in middle-aged and older individuals.

SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of gluteal tendinopathy may include:

  • Pain and tenderness on the outside of the hip or buttock
  • Stiffness or limited range of motion in the hip joint
  • Weakness or difficulty with hip movements, such as walking or climbing stairs
  • A clicking or snapping sensation in the hip joint
  • Pain that worsens with prolonged sitting, standing, or walking

Risk factors

Risk factors for gluteal tendinopathy may include:

  • Repetitive strain on the gluteal tendons, such as in individuals who participate in sports that involve running or jumping, or those who perform manual labor or other repetitive activities
  • Age-related degeneration of the tendons and other tissues in the hip joint
  • Certain medical conditions, such as obesity or diabetes, which can increase the risk of tendon damage
TREATMENT

Treatment for gluteal tendinopathy may include:

  • Rest and avoiding activities that aggravate the symptoms
  • Ice or heat therapy to reduce pain and inflammation
  • Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) to relieve pain and inflammation
  • Physical therapy to improve hip strength, flexibility, and function
  • Injections of corticosteroids or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to reduce pain and inflammation
  • In severe or persistent cases, surgery may be recommended to repair or reconstruct the damaged tendons.
