What is Extensor tendon injuries of hand ?

The extensor tendons are a group of tough, fibrous tissues that attach the muscles in the forearm to the bones of the fingers and thumb. They allow us to extend (straighten) our fingers and thumb. Extensor tendon injuries of the hand occur when one or more of these tendons are torn or cut, usually as a result of a traumatic injury.

CAUSES

Common causes of extensor tendon injuries include:

  • Direct trauma to the hand or finger, such as a laceration, crush injury, or fracture
  • Overuse injuries from repetitive activities such as typing or playing musical instruments
  • Tendinitis or tendon degeneration from age or chronic disease
SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of extensor tendon injuries can include:

  • Pain, swelling, and tenderness around the affected area
  • Difficulty straightening one or more fingers or the thumb
  • Inability to extend the wrist or fingers fully
  • A popping or snapping sound at the time of injury
TREATMENT

Treatment for extensor tendon injuries depends on the severity and location of the injury. Minor injuries may be treated with rest, ice, and immobilization with a splint or brace. More severe injuries may require surgery to repair or reattach the torn or cut tendon. Physical therapy is often necessary to regain strength and range of motion in the affected hand or finger. It is important to seek medical attention promptly if you suspect you have an extensor tendon injury, as prompt treatment can help prevent long-term complications such as joint stiffness and loss of function.
