Ankle avulsion fractures occur when a small piece of bone is pulled away from the main bone by a tendon or ligament. This typically happens during sudden, forceful movements or twisting injuries, common in sports activities.
Avulsion fractures in the ankle can occur at different locations, including:-
Treatment for avulsion fractures of ankle depends on the severity and location of the fracture. Most avulsion fractures are stable and can be treated non-surgically:-
Rest: Avoiding activities that cause pain.
Ice: Applying ice packs wrapped in a towel for 15-20 minutes every 3-4 hours to reduce swelling and pain.
Compression: Wrapping the ankle with a bandage to help control swelling.
Elevation: Keeping the ankle raised above the heart to minimize swelling.
Pain medication: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain.
Immobilization: A walking boot or cast may be used for a few weeks to protect the ankle and allow the bone to heal. Weight-bearing is usually allowed as pain subsides.
Physical therapy: Once the initial pain and swelling decrease, exercises to restore range of motion, strength, and balance are crucial for a full recovery.
In some cases, if the bone fragment is significantly displaced, surgery may be necessary to realign and fix the fracture using screws or wires.
Recovery
Recovery time varies depending on the severity of the fracture, but it typically takes several weeks to a few months for the pain and swelling to subside and for the bone to heal completely.
