Avulsion Fractures of Ankle Treatment In Delhi NCR.

Introduction

Ankle avulsion fractures occur when a small piece of bone is pulled away from the main bone by a tendon or ligament. This typically happens during sudden, forceful movements or twisting injuries, common in sports activities.

Symptoms of Avulsion Fractures of Ankle
The symptoms of an ankle avulsion fracture can be similar to those of an ankle sprain and may include:-
  • Sudden and severe pain at the time of injury
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tenderness to the touch
  • Difficulty or inability to bear weight
  • Limited range of motion
  • A popping or cracking sound at the time of injury
Types of Avulsion Fractures of Ankle

Avulsion fractures in the ankle can occur at different locations, including:-

  • Lateral malleolus: The outer bone of the ankle.
  • Medial malleolus: The inner bone of the ankle.
  • Base of the fifth metatarsal: The outer bone of the midfoot.
  • Anterior tibia: The front of the lower leg bone.
Treatment for Avulsion Fractures of Ankle

Treatment for avulsion fractures of ankle depends on the severity and location of the fracture. Most avulsion fractures are stable and can be treated non-surgically:-

Rest: Avoiding activities that cause pain.

Ice: Applying ice packs wrapped in a towel for 15-20 minutes every 3-4 hours to reduce swelling and pain.

Compression: Wrapping the ankle with a bandage to help control swelling.

Elevation: Keeping the ankle raised above the heart to minimize swelling.

Pain medication: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage pain.

Immobilization: A walking boot or cast may be used for a few weeks to protect the ankle and allow the bone to heal. Weight-bearing is usually allowed as pain subsides.

Physical therapy: Once the initial pain and swelling decrease, exercises to restore range of motion, strength, and balance are crucial for a full recovery.

In some cases, if the bone fragment is significantly displaced, surgery may be necessary to realign and fix the fracture using screws or wires.

Recovery

Recovery time varies depending on the severity of the fracture, but it typically takes several weeks to a few months for the pain and swelling to subside and for the bone to heal completely.
